Message from the Head of Department
Speech and language pathologists are healthcare professionals who work not only with typicaly developing children but also with individuals with special needs (such as those with Down syndrome, autism, etc.). They play a crucial role in the prevention and rehabilitation of disorders related to speech, language, voice, and swalowing.
As the Department of Speech and Language Pathology at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Istanbul Nisantasi University, our goal is to train competent and proficient speech and language pathologists who can effectively apply therapy practices, possess strong communication skills, are eager to conduct research in the field, and are open to innovations. We strive to cultivate professionals who closely follow technological advancements and developments while embracing a lifelong learning philosophy under the motto “People First.”
Graduates of our department have the opportunity to establish their own centers or clinics, work in public or private healthcare institutions, nursing homes, special education and rehabilitation centers, and pursue academic careers in higher education institutions.
In our ever-globalizing and rapidly changing world, new healthcare needs continue to emerge, requiring skilled and experienced healthcare professionals to meet these demands. About Us
Our Mission
The Bachelor’s Program in Speech and Language Pathology at Istanbul Nisantasi University aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills before they enter the profession. Through preparatory courses delivered by experienced and specialized faculty members, we strive to ensure that students acquire al the fundamental competencies of the field. Our goal is to train highly qualified and ethicaly responsible pathologists who can meet both the short-term and long-term needs of the country.
Our Vision
To become a nationaly and internationaly recognized program that supports research in the field of Speech and Language Pathology, fosters innovation, effectively integrates technology, and produces highly skilled and competent professionals who strive for excellence in their practice.
Career Opportunities
In recent years, the importance of a holistic approach to the treatment of speech, language, voice, and swalowing disorders has been increasingly recognized. Speech and language pathologists have become an essential part of the healthcare system, providing specialized treatments to improve quality of life and achieve health-related goals. Graduates can work in public and university hospitals, private hospitals, public health centers, schools for the hearing impaired, general education schools, preschools, private clinics, special education and rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and guidance and research centers. Those who wish to pursue an academic career can continue their postgraduate studies and work as university faculty members.

Purpose of the Department
Educational Objectives of the Program
PEA1. Demonstrates a culturaly based holistic approach in speech and language therapy applications for individuals, families and communities.
PEA2. Collects evidence-based data, records, interprets, reports results, prepares, implements and follows up on therapy plans using the necessary technology, tools and equipment in his/her field in accordance with the ethical rules and laws of the profession.
PEA3. Uses critical thinking in every aspect of professional and social life.
PEA4. Communicates effectively with patients and relatives he/she provides care to within the health care system and with other health professionals included in the health team.
PEA5. Follows basic, current, theoretical and applied scientific knowledge in the field of Speech and Language Pathology to increase the quality of therapy.
Program Educational Outcomes
PO1. Thanks to his/her research ability and knowledge about Speech and Language Therapy applications, he/she applies these applications on a personalized basis.
PO2. Solves complex and unpredictable problems encountered in applications related to his/her field.
PO3. Independently conducts an advanced study related to his/her field.
PO4. Evaluates the development of the work team under his/her responsibility in project studies related to his/her field.
PO5. Organizes events such as projects, seminars, trainings, etc. that will provide social contributions related to his/her field.
PO6. Uses the necessary information and communication technologies together with computer software at the Advanced Level of the European Computer User License regarding the subjects required by the field and in which he/she is assigned.
PO7. Defends social, scientific, cultural and ethical values in the stages of collecting data related to the field and announcing the results.
PO8. Examines innovations related to the subjects in which he/she is assigned, such as Speech and Language Pathology applications and treatments.
PO9. Evaluates the advanced knowledge and skills acquired in his/her field with a critical approach.

The event titled "A Polyvagal View of Autism: Connecting with the Nervous System" organized online by the Department of Language and Speech Pathology of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Istanbul Nişantaşı University on May 5, 2025 was held with a high level of participation. In the event, Specialist Dr. Rana Dural Yaraşır presented a perspective based on the polyvagal theory in the context of autism spectrum disorder. In the presentation, topics such as nervous system regulation, sense of security, social interaction and their effects on the therapeutic process were discussed in detail. Participants had the opportunity to obtain up-to-date information on the neurophysiological processes of individuals with autism.At the end of the event, participants' questions were answered and an interactive discussion environment was provided on the subject. We would like to thank Ms. Rana Dural Yaraşır for this valuable sharing and wish to come together again in similar scientific events.
In the event organized online by the Department of Speech and Language Pathology at Nişantaşı University in Istanbul on April 22, 2025, Specialist Ody. Eyyüp Diyar Doğan was hosted. The event addressed the definition, symptoms, assessment methods and intervention strategies of auditory processing disorders. Specialist Ody. Doğan explained the basic neurophysiological processes related to auditory processing in a simple and understandable way, while providing examples from clinical applications, providing participants with the opportunity to relate theoretical knowledge to practice. The presentation, which was followed with interest by the students, was completed in an interactive manner with a question-answer section. We would like to thank Mr. Eyyüp Diyar Doğan for his valuable information and contributions.
In an event organized online by the Department of Language and Speech Pathology at Nişantaşı University in Istanbul on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, Assoc. Prof. Merve Işık met with students. The presentation, which was held within the scope of the Health Sciences Faculty KEP II course, focused on the auditory approach in the evaluation and intervention of speech sound disorders. Assoc. Prof. Işık conveyed topics such as the perception of speech sounds, auditory discrimination, and the integration of memory processes into therapy, enriched with case examples. The event, which attracted great interest from the participants, provided students with the opportunity to both reinforce their theoretical knowledge and develop practice-based perspectives. At the end of the event, an interactive sharing environment was provided with a Q&A session. We would like to thank Ms. Merve Işık for her contributions and hope to meet again in similar academic meetings.
In the event organized online by the Department of Language and Speech Pathology at Istanbul Nişantaşı University on Friday, December 13, 2024 at 10:00, Language and Speech Pathologist Sinem Ekici Yaş came together with students. The event addressed topics such as the daily functioning of a language and speech pathologist working in a state hospital, clinical cases encountered, professional responsibilities and working conditions. Participants had the opportunity to broaden their professional perspectives by benefiting from the experiences of an expert working in public institutions. The event, which was followed with interest by students, ended with a Q&A session. We would like to thank Ms. Sinem Ekici Yaş for her contributions.
At the event held online on May 6, 2024 by the Department of Language and Speech Pathology of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Istanbul Nişantaşı University, Specialist Dr. Safiye Tekkeli Demirel met with students. At the event, the pathophysiology of post-stroke dysphagia, assessment methods and intervention approaches were presented in detail. While the effects of swalowing disorders on the individual's quality of life were discussed, the importance of a multidisciplinary approach was also emphasized. The presentation, enriched with clinical examples, alowed students to associate theoretical knowledge with clinical practice. The event, which attracted great interest from the participants, was concluded with a question-answer session. We would like to thank our speaker for his contributions and wish to come together again in similar scientific events.
In the event organized online by the Department of Language and Speech Pathology at Istanbul Nişantaşı University on March 20, 2024, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Semra Selvi Balo met with students. Current approaches to aphasia were discussed. In the event, the definition of aphasia, its causes and its effects on the individual were explained in detail. In addition, the contribution of the cooperation of different disciplines such as speech and language pathologist, neurologists, occupational pathologist and psychologists to the rehabilitation process of individuals with aphasia was emphasized. In the event whr the multidisciplinary approach was concretized with case examples, participants had the opportunity to both reinforce their theoretical knowledge and gain new perspectives on practice. The event, which attracted great interest, ended with a question and answer session. We would like to thank Ms. Semra Selvi Balo for her contributions.
