Midwifery is a multifaceted profession that responds to women's physical and emotional needs throughout their reproductive years—particularly during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period—ensures that birth takes place safely, provides the newborn's initial care, and guides the family.

Having held a special place in women's lives for centuries, midwifery continues to develop today as a modern and professional healthcare discipline grounded in scientific evidence. Authorities such as the World Health Organization and the International Confederation of Midwives emphasize that the need for midwives in improving maternal and infant health is greater than ever.

With our newly established department, we aim to contribute to this universal need. Our expert academic staff work to prepare students for the profession in the best possible way through an educational model equipped with up-to-date knowledge and skills.

Supported by practical training, our program aims to educate you not only as technicaly competent professionals but also as compassionate healthcare professionals guided by ethical values.

About

History

Our department was established in 2025 within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Nişantaşı University. The founder of the department is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fadime Çınar, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The department's curricula were prepared in accordance with the criteria of national and international accreditation bodies. Theoretical courses are supported by laboratory practices and clinical internships. The program is designed to enable graduates to enter the healthcare sector after completing their undergraduate education and to pursue successful careers.

Vision

To become a pioneering department recognized nationaly and internationaly for its innovative, principled, and responsible approach to education and for guiding the scientific, technological, and social development of the midwifery profession. The department aims to become a strong academic and practice center that plays an active role in developing midwifery education and health policies, responds to the needs of the field, encourages scientific research, and contributes through consultancy services.

Mission

To educate professional midwives who are competent in protecting, improving, and supporting the health of women of reproductive age, newborns, and families, and who can manage pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum processes safely and effectively in accordance with scientific evidence. Our department aims to support the development of midwives who respect human rights, adhere to ethical principles, possess a contemporary and innovative mindset, conduct research, question established practices, collaborate effectively, and guide society. It also undertakes the mission of educating leading midwives who can contribute to shaping professional policies and practices by promoting scientific studies that improve maternal, fetal, newborn, and public health.

Program Educational Objectives

Graduates of this program are expected to attain the following qualifications through the knowledge, skills, experience, and awareness they acquire during their undergraduate education:

To become strong and informed members of the healthcare team who play an active role in protecting and improving maternal, fetal, and newborn health and who fulfill their national and international responsibilities in accordance with professional ethical principles.

Performance Indicator: p’ of our graduates are actively employed in delivery rooms, neonatal units, or women's health units within the first year following graduation.

To provide qualified and safe midwifery services by continuously developing current professional knowledge and skills, communicating effectively and collaborating with healthcare team members, and responding sensitively to the needs of individuals, families, and society.

Performance Indicator: 5% of our graduates serve as team leaders or unit supervisors in maternity and women's health units within the first three to five years following graduation.

To develop as professionals who sustain their professional growth with an awareness of lifelong learning and contribute to the advancement of the profession by taking active roles in education, research, and professional policy processes in the field of midwifery.

Performance Indicator: ’ of our graduates participate in professional development courses, certificate programs, or research/academic activities within the first five years following graduation.

Program Learning Outcomes

1	Applies fundamental theoretical knowledge specific to midwifery, relating it to current literature and scientific evidence, at a level that enables independent decision-making during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
2	Develops a holistic and evidence-based approach to the care of women, newborns, children, and families while considering cultural differences.
3	Plans and implements monitoring activities aimed at protecting, maintaining, and improving health, evaluates the results, and carries out appropriate interventions.
4	Ensures a safe environment during normal and high-risk pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and postpartum processes and assumes responsibility for management in emergencies by applying effective clinical decision-making skills.
5	Provides high-quality care and counseling that support the adaptation of women, newborns, and families during the postpartum period.
6	Conducts professional practices in accordance with ethical principles, legal regulations, legislation, and professional standards, and assumes responsibility with an awareness of their social impact.
7	Participates actively in research, education, and projects specific to midwifery; analyzes the data obtained and translates findings into practice.
8	Communicates effectively with the healthcare team and other disciplines; works collaboratively as a team member to improve patient safety and quality of care.
9	Follows developments in science, technology, and health policy and continuously updates professional knowledge and skills through a lifelong-learning approach.
10	Uses oral and written Turkish communication skills effectively and possesses sufficient foreign-language proficiency in English to follow current literature and communicate professionaly.

Degree Awarded

Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Midwifery .

Registration and Admission Requirements

Applicants wishing to enroll in the program must have graduated from a high school or equivalent institution and must obtain a sufficient score in the quantitative score category of the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS). Student admissions are conducted in accordance with the principles determined by the Council of Higher Education. International students are evaluated according to the achievement criteria established by the University Senate.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for graduation, students must successfully complete al courses in the curriculum, corresponding to at least 240 ECTS credits, and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 at the time of graduation.
Students must also successfully complete the applied courses and graduation project to graduate.
Monitor and provide care for at least 40 women at risk during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period,
Undertake pregnancy monitoring and necessary care for at least 40 pregnant women and conduct at least 100 prenatal examinations while providing counseling to pregnant women,
Perform episiotomy and suturing practice; this practice must include both theoretical knowledge and clinical experience. Suturing may be performed following an episiotomy or for simple perineal tears. Simulation may be used when necessary,
Participate actively in breech deliveries; when a breech delivery is not available, simulation practice must be completed,
Personaly conduct at least 40 deliveries; when a sufficient number of deliveries cannot be reached, the student may assist in 20 additional deliveries to complete a total of 30,
Provide care and conduct examinations for postpartum women and healthy newborns by following at least 100 cases,
Undertake the observation and care of newborns, including premature, postmature, low-birth-weight infants and infants requiring special care,
Participate in the care of women with gynecological and obstetric conditions,
Gain both theoretical and clinical experience by participating in medical and surgical care processes.
